What blogs are so well-designed that they make you say, "I wish my blog looked like that"? What is it about them that makes them good? Please comment with your favorites.

My clicking the link to Michelle Malkin's rightwing crapsite was regrettable. The design was as weak as the content.

Does anyone know where a good place is for a newb, such as me, to get started on custom designing a MovableType blog? I really want to create a great custom design, but don't want to use the templates. I'm pretty good with editing css files, just don't know where to begin.
